Long considered one of Japan’s top three gardens, alongside Mito’s Kairaku-en and Kanazawa’s Kenroku-en, Kōraku-en straddles the Asahi River. It was originally built in 1700 by local lord Ikeda Tsunamasa, whose former home, Okayama-jō (2-3-1 Marunouchi; tel. 086/225-2096; https://okayama-kanko.net/ujo; 9am-5:30pm daily, closed until Nov. 2022 for renovation; ¥300 adults; ¥120 children 6-14), sits beside the lush landscape garden. It’s a black fortress (nicknamed “crow castle”), with white and gold fish ornaments curling upward on the corners of its eaves. If you’re most interested in seeing it from the outside, the view from the garden suffices.
